To start this little discussion, lets talk about evil as in evil forces and stuff like that. Are there evil forces at work in our world? It doesnt take a great deal of super-heavy thinking to realize theres something rotten in Hog Hollow. In this far from perfect earthly world there are a whole bunch of individuals and groups who are resorting to all sorts of skullduggery to achieve their devious goals. And yes, sometimes with catastrophic results. The newspapers and other media news reports are commonly filled with examples.

From a spiritual point of view, theres probably a reason to allow these things to happen. For one thing, this yucky stuff could always serve as a source of lessons and positive reinforcement for all of us. If we see and hear about things happening that we believe are just not right, this can help to solidify our values. If we are on the receiving end of a really bad situation, this could possibly turn into one of the best learning experiences of our life if well let it.

The bad or evil stuff also provides a reference against which we can measure good. I think the following question sums it up nicely. If there were not evil, what would good be?

So what is the source of all the evil things we see happening in this world? Are they the work of satan? Is the devil really meddling in our affairs to try to drag us away from our God?

Heres a quick history lesson. A long, long time ago, a satan was a considered to be a member of the divine court whose main job was to snoop around earth and report back to the super powers on us humans. The original Hebrew word for these sneaky folks was later translated in Greek to diabolos (slanderous) and then to the Latin diabolus eventually reaching our language as devil. Along the way we personified the original Greek translation so we eventually wound up with a concept of a really bad guy who is responsible for the worlds evil doings. The image of the human-animal demon with horns and a tail popped up sometime during the Middle Ages. Interesting, huh?

My guess (thats all it is folks) is that we humans have maybe promoted the concept of this bad guy for a couple of reasons. One may be so we dont have to take responsibility for our own actions. Its the easy way out, isnt it? Its pretty much the same as blaming your little brother (or sister) for the crayon scribblings on the wall. Not me, Mom. Herbie did it! Only now as adults, we can all chime in together to sing, The devil made me/us/them do it!

Or maybe we just picked up on what appeared to be a logical idea from the ancient Persians and put it to use. Its a good guy/bad guy good and evil thing. You know how easily that sort of thing can happen. Someone else already has what seems to be a reasonably good idea so we just buy into it either because we honestly believe its true or it blends in smoothly with whatever concept were trying to promote.

Heres another off-the-wall thought. Maybe we would be well advised to stop mentioning or even thinking about the evil dude altogether. We humans are very special creatures with amazing abilities. We know that we have the ability to imagine, visualize and create those things which never before existed. This includes not only material objects but abstract concepts as well. The evidence is everywhere we look. Perhaps the very recognition of the possible existence of a modern satan is the very thing that is allows him to exist and negatively influence our lives. Maybe its the only thing. Maybe we should all just forget about the horned dude altogether and individually take responsibility for and be accountable for - our actions as good or as evil as they might be.

So, are we humans inherently evil? Nah, but for whatever reason, we do frequently wander off the path into the thorny bushes. Sometimes it may be because our life experiences (programming) have been a bit screwed up. Or sometimes maybe we just develop some weird priorities and over-focus on some really strange (and frequently hurtful) things. And some of it may even be due to a skewed interpretation of messages provided by our survival instincts. Lots of possibilities.

Yes, there are certainly evil forces in this world, however it really looks like we humans are the ones who are exerting all the effort to keep these forces alive and well. Maybe who knows? I recently heard that our universe is created in conundrums (as in the answer to a question is only another question). For whatever reason, that appears to be quite intentional. Perhaps to promote questioning, the learning process and our individual development. Again, who knows?

Once you have this software creating pop-ups is really easy.

The first thing you need to do is to create a HTML file that you want to use as a pop-up; for instance this could be a special offer, or a mailing list opt-in page.

Now that you've got your page sorted upload it to a suitable directory on your site, also upload quickpop.php to that same directory.

You have only one step to go before the pop-ups will appear on your site, and that is integration. To integrate the pop-up with any page on your site. Just copy and paste the following HTML code into any page on your site, modifying your_directory" to where you installed quickpop.php, and your_popup.htm" to the name of your pop-up file:

That's it! If you now go any page where you copy and pasted the above code you should see your pop-up appear!

To update your pop-up all you need to do is modify your pop-up html file.

Surviving the Summer With Kids

You know what its like kids are desperate to start the summer holidays, youre anxious to reduce the clutter in your calendar, everyones looking forward to the warm weather, and then suddenly, after one week of summer bliss, the whine sets in:

Mom, Im SO BORED!

This, from children with a room so bulging with activities, games, toys, crafts, and who knows what all else, that they cant keep it cleaned or organized.

However, even with all of this, suddenly, youre expected to be the entertainment committee. You need to have wonderfully stimulating activities for your kids, up your sleeve, ready at a moments notice but you, too, are needing a break. Whats a mother to do?

Well, here are some tips:

1. Let them be bored. By jumping in with solutions all the time, you are not allowing your children to use their own creativity. Ignore the bored whine if you can, and simply suggest that they go look through their rooms for something to do. If that doesnt work, give them chores whenever they say theyre bored.

2. Have a planned activity each day that stimulates their creativity. Do prepare one activity a day supplies for a water fight, an art project or science experiment, a hike, etc. Do something that gets them out of the everyday, and triggers their mind to think of something different or unusual so that they can stimulate their own creativity.

3. Get them outside. Send them outside every morning, before the dangerous sun times and make them stay there until lunch. There are playgrounds, bicycles, sports and games etc. that can keep them going for hours if they are bored enough to find something to do. The sunshine will also stimulate happy hormones which will have them (and you!) feeling much better about life. If its raining, dress them appropriately, and send them out for at least an hour. They can do puddle jumping, rescue earth worms, make mud pies the list is endless.

4. Give them a routine. Create a daily, loose-but-structured routine that gives each day some framework. Include chores, scheduled activities (meals, screen time, outdoor play, a planned activity, etc.) Dont over schedule or youll be doing them (and yourself!) a disservice. Kids lives are so over-booked these days that they never have time for dreaming or self-discovery.

5. Restrict Screen Time. Try and keep mindless entertainment via a screen to an absolute minimum. Let kids schedule one TV show plus one hour for games each day, and then let them use the rest for other things.

Slackware is a conservative distribution, meaning that it only offers in its distribution package kernel versions and third party libraries, once its been proved to be stable and reliable. As a result, Slackware is one the most stable Linux operating system on the market. If the user wishes the most recent Linux kernel and libraries, we recommend to look for a different distribution.

Another reason for us picking Slackware, was because of its text interface, which at the beginning may become a bit difficult, in the long run however it offers a better understanding of the Linux environment. This way most of Slackware configurations are done thru text scripts.

Once it was set the operating system, we picked Apache as our web server. Apache is one of the most popular web server in the internet. For server programming language, we chose PHP. Also, a very popular programming language. Our experience with Apache/PHP proves that this setup is very reliable, working extremely well in our production environment. For workstation programming language, we chose javascript, which besides of having a simple syntax, it offers lots of resources.

Apache web server is really a complete web server. Also, it can become very complex with many configuration setups.

For our database, we picked Postgresql. This database has been made available to the public for more than 15 years, and besides of being well debugged, it offers so many resources that it has become one of the best database options from Open Source Code softwares. Extremely reliable, Postgresql has reported cases where there have been databases in production with over 4 terabytes. Besides all of that, Postresql is not the most popular Open Source Code database. A matter of marketing ? Probably.

As for the programming language PHP, we had to use an object oriented application structure. There are many PHP application structures being offered with Open Source Code license. Object oriented application is very important, because it makes programming very easy and scalable up to the point where the system may grow without many problems. Also, it helps to keep PHP code separated from HTML, with the help of some specific libraries, such as Smarty. We make use of Smarty library and we believe that it is a very important resource, which can even make web pages faster thru the use of its cache functions.

Also a very important set of libraries worth mentioning for PHP systems, is the PEAR libraries. In PEAR web site, among the many libraries being offered, there are the database interface DB and the MAIL_QUEUE, which sends emails thru the use of database.

As we came to the end of our project, we had to use some sort of real time database replication. For that we chose the DRBD and Heartbeat libraries. The use of database replication is very important and should not be postponed. Just after 3 months our system got into production, our server hard disk became bad. Thru the use of DRBD/Heartbeat we were able to put the system back into production within seconds, without loosing any data. DRBD/Heartbeat replication is done thru the use of a lan network between the server and slave nodes.

Our project also makes use of ImageMagick (enlarge and reduce images), Iptables (firewall), Tsearch2(text search in portgresql) and Mon (linux monitoring tasks).

Also a very important library worth mentioning is the pseudo APC compiler for PHP. Speed is always a critical factor for internet sites.

Our web site is already in production and based upon our experience we can say that the Open Source Code softwares we picked, proved to be extremely reliable and stable. Open Source Code softwares can certainly be an excellent option for developing web sites.

That's from the questionnaire all my students send in right after they sign up for my 3 Scripts (100 customers 100 days) telecourse. Here's a typical answer from a gent, a veteran in the business:

"Honestly...I never know what to say. The "Health Consultant" line bores me. "I'm a Network Marketer" line turns my stomach. "I'm a National Director with MY COMPANY NAME" line is responded to by yawns, mine included.

Believe it or not, I usually make something up on the spot, so I don't have to use one of those terrible opening one-liners! Crazy, but true. And then I hope that the person I am speaking to asks me what I am drinking so that I can tell them all about NAME of MY PRODUCT."

The lack of a language barrier means that you will not be able to use this excuse to deny a link request just because you cannot read it.

Article writing is fast becoming the preferred method of creating quality one way links to your website. Imagine a website that translates its content. Again, because the language barriers have been broken through translation, more readers will be reading your articles. Why do so many entrepreneurs struggle to reach their goals?

Because although setting sales and revenue goals and making resolutions is a good place to start, you have to do more than that. If you truly want reach your goals, you have to have a plan. And you have to have deadlines for taking action.

You see, goals and dreams dont become reality just because you want them to. Neither do resolutions.

Even if you start out strong, without a plan and concrete deadlines its far too easy to find an excuse, or create a roadblock. Or simply put off for today what you can do tomorrow.

Its also easy to give up because achieving your goals just seems too darn difficult. Luckily, humans have an amazing capacity to change, adapt and overcomeeven against tremendous odds.

Just think about the people who climb big mountains like Everest...

Having been an avid extreme sports participant for half my life, Ive had a chance to chat with quite a few successful mountaineers. Personally, as much as I love mountain biking, whitewater kayaking and backcountry skiing, Ill never understand why they do it.

Every single mountain climber Ive ever met agrees that high-altitude mountaineering is a suffer-fest. The closer they get to their goal, the more agonizing each step becomesliterally. Not to mention the fact that it is incredibly dangerous.

Thankfully, for most of us, our small business goals are much easier to achieve than reaching the summit of a mountain like Everest. But there is a lot we can learn from the way these mountaineers go about getting to the top.

How do mountaineers manage to summit major peaks time and again?

By approaching mountain climbing the same you should approach achieving any goal

1) They create a plan

Mountaineers spend literally months planning food, logistics, gear, their route, their possible summit dates and more for a trip that may only last a couple of weeksor less. Without all this planning they would never be successful.

Your goals may not be as difficult, dangerous or extreme, but that doesnt mean you shouldnt devote some time to writing out a plan for reaching them.

2) They set smaller goals with deadlines

Mountaineers dont go from Base Camp to the summit of Everest in one day. They know it takes time to climb a big mountain. And if their sights are set only on the end goal its hard to maintain a positive attitude. Because that end goal is always a long ways off.

Its much easier, and more rewarding, to reach big goals in stages. Plus it gives you a chance to get used to the changes you encounter every step of the way. Thats why mountaineers set a date to reach Base Camp, another to go to Camp 1, and so on until finally they make one last push to the summitideally on their predetermined summit day.

You can, and should, do the same.

3) They remember to plan for the down climb

Mountaineers always say just reaching the summit isnt enough; its only a successful climb if you make it back down. The same holds true for your goals.

If you want to stay on course and truly achieve success, you have to do more than just plan for achieving your short-term goals, or even reaching your summit. Instead you have to think about what youre going to do next to sustain your goals, maintain your new, successful behavior and keep moving forward.

The bottom line isIf you really want to reach your business goals and achieve your dreams, you have to start by making a plan. Abe Lincoln had it right when he said Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Most people avoid planning like the plague, but it really does not have to be difficult. All you need to do is spend a few minutes writing down your main goal, choosing smaller goals to reach along the way, and making a list of what you need to do to make it all happen. And dont forget to include deadlines for when you are going to get each action item done.

So, dont just pick a goal and hope for it to happen. Spend a little time deciding how you are going to make those goals a realitythen take action. Youll be amazed at the great heights you can reach when you do!

The first 3-4 dates are very important. Dating is like a game. If you play it right, you should have been able to escalate to kissing and more. You see within this time frame, the girl decides whether or not youre worth it. If you have not escalated during these dates, you will very likely get into the LJBF (Lets Just Be Friends) category and getting out of this my friends is near to impossible.

Dating Advice 2:

Make the dates interesting. Avoid the usual dating scenes like cinemas, clubs and bars. Be unpredictable. Go for ACTION dates these are dates with a lot of activity. The key word here is VENUE CHANGE. There are reasons for this. You see when we change scenes during a date; subconsciously we feel we have spent a lot more time with the other person, hence building familiarity and comfort. This also has the benefit of making it more interesting.

Dating Advice 3:

For crying out load, STOP with the gifts such as flowers and chocolates. Why? You have only known each other briefly, and doing things like that comes off as APPROVAL SEEKING, and suspicious. You could do these things after youre in the relationship, and want to show your appreciation, but too early, and you will KILL the ATTRACTION.

Dating Advice 4:

Not knowing you are the MAN and she is the WOMAN. As the man you will take the lead. Being the leader has many attractive qualities. Back in tribal times, the leader takes the choice of all the females. This has not changed and still in our subconscious programming. These days women are still looking for those qualities in a man. So how do you take the lead? Decide where you are going in advance, and take the lead in decisions.

Dating Advice 5:

When a woman dates a man she is thinking he seems nice, lets find out more about each other. Too many guys view a woman they are dating as their potential WIFE. As you can imagine this puts a lot of pressure on the guy. They become frigid and cannot BE THEMSELVES. My advice is DONT DO IT. Have the same view as the woman. You are screening her to see if she is worth it. So relax, be laid back and enjoy yourself.

STOP with the needy COMPLIMENTS.

These kinds of compliments send shivers down a woman SPINE people. You are there to find out more about each other and have fun. Dating her just because she is beautiful lowers your standards and intelligent women consider it an insult. They think you are shallow! DONT DO THAT. If you want to give a compliment, give something sincere and genuine. Always include a reason for doing so. For example, I like your top; it goes very well with the colour of your dress.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (Ocd) Is Usually Grouped With Anxiety Disorders

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is usually grouped with anxiety disorders. In recent years it has been increasingly treated with antidepressant medications. OCD consists of two components - obsessive thinking and compulsive actions. It's possible to get the diagnosis without having both components. Here's how I think about OCD:

Obsessive thinking is simply "thinking too much" about things.

A compulsion is an action you do in order to stop the obsessive thinking.

The textbook example is someone who compulsively washes their hands. This person may obsess about germs or dirt. In order to stop these thoughts they wash their hands. When the thoughts return they wash their hands again. These compulsive actions can become ritualized. Persons with OCD may believe that they must turn the light switch off exactly seven times in order to be certain that is really off.

This type of paranoia is not as out-of-touch with reality as paranoid schizophrenia. It is actually the extreme end of thinking too much about things. If you think and think and think about something, you eventually think things are happening that are not really happening. Reducing or managing the stress can eliminate the paranoia in most cases.

OCD is presently treated with antidepressant medications and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. Some research suggests that outcomes are better if both of these techniques are employed. The disorder was not always understood in this way. Consider this excerpt from the 1970 edition of Hinsie & Campbell's Psychiatric Dictionary:

Psychoanalytically, obsessive-compulsive neurosis is interpreted as a defense against aggressive and/or sexual impulses, particularly in relation to the Oedipus complex. The initial defense is to the anal-sadistic level, but the impulses at this level are also intolerable and must be warded-off - by reaction formation, isolation, and undoing.

I don't understand it completely either. The modern DSM-IV defines OCD in the following way:

Either obsessions or compulsions:

Obsessions as defined by:

recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced, at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive and inappropriate and that cause marked anxiety or distress

the thoughts, impulses, or images are not simply excessive worries about real-life problems

the person attempts to ignore or suppress such thoughts, impulses, or images, or to neutralize them with some other thought or action

the person recognizes that the obsess ional thoughts, impulses, or images are a product of his or her own mind (not imposed from without as in thought insertion)

Compulsions as defined by:

repetitive behaviors (e.g., hand washing, ordering, checking) or mental acts (e.g., praying, counting, repeating words silently) that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession, or according to rules that must be applied rigidly

the behaviors or mental acts are aimed at preventing or reducing distress or preventing some dreaded event or situation; however, these behaviors or mental acts either are not connected in a realistic way with what they are designed to neutralize or prevent or are clearly excessive
At some point during the course of the disorder, the person has recognized that the obsessions or compulsions are excessive or unreasonable. Note: This does not apply to children.
The obsessions or compulsions cause marked distress, are time consuming (take more than 1 hour a day), or significantly interfere with the person's normal routine, occupational (or academic) functioning, or usual social activities or relationships.

If another Axis I disorder is present, the content of the obsessions or compulsions is not restricted to it (e.g., preoccupation with food in the presence of an Eating Disorder; hair pulling in the presence of Trichotillomania; concern with appearance in the presence of Body Dimorphic Disorder; preoccupation with drugs in the presence of a Substance Use Disorder; preoccupation with having a serious illness in the presence of Hypochondrias is; preoccupation with sexual urges or fantasies in the presence of a Perihelia; or guilty ruminations in the presence of Major Depressive Disorder).
The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication) or a general medical condition.

So far this sounds reasonably straightforward. It gets more complex. For starters some compulsive behaviors have their own diagnosis. Trichotillomania is the name for compulsive hair-pulling. To make things even more interesting there is another disorder with a name that is confusingly similar to OCD. Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder could be thought of as a milder, but more longstanding version of OCD - but that's not quite right.

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder looks entirely different from OCD at first glance. The DSM-IV describes it this way:

A pervasive pattern of preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and mental and interpersonal control, at the expense of flexibility, openness, and efficiency, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by four (or more) of the following:

is preoccupied with details, rules, lists, order, organization, or schedules to the extent that the major point of the activity is lost

shows perfectionism that interferes with task completion (e.g., is unable to complete a project because his or her own overly strict standards are not met)

is excessively devoted to work and productivity to the exclusion of leisure activities and friendships (not accounted for by obvious economic necessity)

is over conscientious, scrupulous, and inflexible about matters of morality, ethics, or values (not accounted for by cultural or religious identification) is unable to discard worn-out or worthless objects even when they have no sentimental value

is reluctant to delegate tasks or to work with others unless they submit to exactly his or her way of doing things

adopts a miserly spending style toward both self and others; money is viewed as something to be hoarded for future catastrophes

shows rigidity and stubbornness

When we call someone "anal" (short for "anal-retentive") we are referring to this disorder, rather than OCD. Like all personality disorders, this can be thought of as an extreme exaggeration of a certain personality style. We all know someone who is somewhat like this. It's only a personality disorder when it is so extreme that it gets in the way.

If you look hard you can see why these disorders have similar names. Both involve the tendency to obsess and to act compulsively. OCD is an illness that can develop at different points in life. Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder must have begun by early adulthood. It refers to a deeply imbedded personality style, rather than to a set of acute symptoms that get in the way.

Having some obsessive-compulsive personality traits can pay off. Students and employees who are "excessively devoted to work and productivity to the exclusion of leisure activities and friendships" can be very productive. This productivity is rewarded by good grades, pay raises, and advancement at work. Other aspects of life can suffer, however, if things are not in balance.

Psychotherapy and medications are used to treat OCD and trichotillomania. Psychotherapy can also be helpful to treat Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, (with medications sometimes used as an adjunct). If these symptoms sound like your life, and if they are getting in the way, consider consulting a mental health professional in your area.
